After a continued relationship with BOC Edwards, Bubble Automation was asked to provide an upgrade solution to an existing XDS – Scroll pump test facility at their Burgess Hill plant.
Bubble Automation has already provided several upgrades to BOC Edwards' various pump test facilities in the South of England.
The existing Scroll pump test system utilised an Opto 22
requirements and costs etc, it was decided to keep the Opto 22 Control (I/O units) and replace the SCADA.
At that time Bubble Automation had little experience with the Opto 22 system, so the project was split into
two sections. The first involved proving that the Opto 22 control units could be communicated with
successfully.
This was completed and a demonstration held at the BOC Edwards plant at Burgess Hill. Several key
personnel were in attendance to validate this first stage. This consisted of an Opto 22 command module
together with several input and output modules.
A simple Delphi application was developed which communicated with the Opto 22 units and displayed the
status of the various inputs and outputs. Bubble Automation successfully proved that these Opto 22 units
could be controlled.
Bubble Automation's solution was to use two single board computers, one housed in each control cabinet.
These would have a specially written Pascal based program to perform the Scroll Pump testing. The on
board Ethernet was used to communicate with a new SCADA PC having a Windows based Delphi
application.
The old system used to have a small two line LCD screen for each pump test bay, these were replaced with
a large TFT monitor located on the front of the two control cabinets.
